Michael Alan Ross is a Automotive Photographer and began to shoot at the age of nine in NYC. He started to photograph cars for Ford originally, and from there he started to photograph all typed of cars, and motorcycles. As a child he was encouraged by his parents with photography and art. Their house was a creative, artistic, and musical house. It was perfect for the type of thing that Michael was going to do as a career. He really blossomed from this, and became an amazing automotive photographer.
His photos vary, but I really like his “Detail” and “on Location” in his portfolio. With his On Location photos, I think he was trying to show the beauty of these cars in a way no one else does. I like the way the shadows are cast around some of the cars. Some of the cars have a vibe that is exotic, while others have a classic colorful vibe. The photos in the details area are very descriptive, and show us the importance of cars and the effort put into them.
I think he was trying to find a way to show people that cars are more than what meets the eye. They have a character, and in some ways a personality. They are special, and have some sort of positive influence on everyone who looks at them. It shows people to dream, and someday, maybe, just maybe, you will end up like this guy. This gives people hope, and a way to focus their goals and do good in the world.
Michael Alan Ross has influenced my images in a big way. He changed my sense of liking cars from thinking all about the specs on them, to something better; thinking about the intuition, the technology, the sense, and the vibes the cars give. I like to think about the photos I take now, and not just snap away, and hope they turn out well. He has changed my work very much, and I am very excited to see what is in store in the future of cars, and car photographers. This encourages me and reminds me of my goals in life. It also shows me that some day I could think back and remember when I was just dreaming, then I made it.
I took quite similar pictures to Michaels. Obviously, his were better (he is a professional) but mine did turn out pretty great. My first photo was not taken in a great location, so I zoomed in on the picture. His however, were taken in a great location and you could only see the car in the photo. Our photos look quite similar, except for the lighting. Mine was more of a white lightly edited light, his was more of the heavy edited warm lighting. The angles were about the same, and our cars are the exact same. I think both of our photos turned out well.
The second photos were of white BMW’s. His were taken in what looks like a countryside, somewhere foreign. Mine were taken in the middle of a bustling college town I call home. Mine were of a BMW M4, the “Motorsport” of Michaels photo, the BMW 4 series. I actually like my photo better than his, and like the cosmopolitan feel of the photo. I like his a lot, I just like the way the shadows hit my car better. In all, they are great photos, I just like mine better.
My final car I took a picture of is one of my all time favorite cars: the Laferrari. The Laferrari is their prized car, and their most advanced, and their fastest. I took this at a car open house, and it was amazing. The photos are a little bit different, but I like them both. I would have taken a picture of a different colored one if I were him, but it is all personal preference. The photos are both from the back. They are both from a great angle too. I like his angle better, but I think mine turned out better than his.
